Privacy Policy

Last updated: November 2, 2026

In short: you sign in to use Food Compare. Your comparison history and your allergen and diet settings stay on your phone. We receive the barcodes you look up and the photos you choose to have read, and we never sell your data or show ads.

Who we are

Food Compare is provided by Bravarb Technology LLC ("we", "us"). This policy covers the iOS and Android apps and their servers.

What we collect, and why

Your account

You sign in with Apple, Google or an email address, through Google Firebase Authentication. We keep your email address (or the ID Apple or Google gives us) and an account ID. We never see your password for Apple or Google.

Restaurant menus

Restaurant menus are stored in the app; browsing and comparing them sends nothing to us.

Barcodes and searches

The barcodes you scan and the words you search for are sent to our servers to find the product, in our copy of the USDA FoodData Central database or in Open Food Facts. Open Food Facts receives the barcode or search words only.

Photos you choose to have read

A photo of a Nutrition Facts label, or of products on a shelf, is sent through our servers to OpenAI, which reads the label or names the products. We do not keep these photos, and under OpenAI's API terms they are not used to train its models.

Nutrition you add to the shared database

When you confirm a label scan for a product no database knows, we keep the barcode, product name, brand and nutrition values, linked to your ID. Once a second person's scan agrees, the product's nutrition (never who added it) is shown to everyone. If you delete your account, what you added stays in the database without the link to you.

What stays on your phone

Your comparison history and your allergen and diet settings, including allergens you type in yourself, are stored only on your phone. The goal mode you compare with is kept there too; the only copy we receive is the mode's name in a usage event (below). Share cards never include your goal or any personal information.

Subscriptions

If you subscribe to Premium, Apple or Google sends us proof of the purchase (a transaction ID and its status) so we can switch Premium on. We never receive your payment details.

Usage events

The app sends us a small set of events, such as "a comparison was shown with 3 items", "a goal mode was chosen" or "a share card was made", to measure whether the app is useful. They are stored with a scrambled form of your ID, not your name or email, and are kept for 30 days.

Photo-read counts and server logs

We count how many photos you have had read: in all for the 50 free reads, and per day with Premium. Our servers also keep short-lived logs of requests and errors for security and fixing problems.

Who we share it with

Only the services that run Food Compare for us: Amazon Web Services (our servers, in the United States), Google Firebase (sign-in), OpenAI (reading photos), Open Food Facts (product lookups) and Apple or Google (sign-in and payments). We do not sell or rent personal information, use it for advertising, or share it with data brokers. We may disclose information when the law requires it or to protect people's safety.

Keeping and deleting your data

Go to Profile → your account → Delete account. This deletes your account, the data our servers keep for you and the history on your phone. You may also email us to see, correct, export or delete your data.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or the CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal information and to object to how it is used. Email us to use them; we will not treat you differently for doing so.

Children

Food Compare is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. The Kids goal mode compares products for children; it does not collect information about them.

Allergen alerts and AI

Allergen and diet alerts are generated automatically from product databases and from AI that reads labels and photos. They can be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Always read the package before you eat or serve a product.

Not medical advice

Food Compare compares nutrition facts. It is general information, not medical advice, and does not diagnose or treat any condition.

Changes

We will update the date above when this policy changes, and tell you in the app about significant changes.
